Semen collection using intercourse vs. masturbation

My wife and I had been TTC from 2005-2006. After months of trying we decided to visit a fertility doc where I was diagnosed with having a below average sperm count. Our physician suggested intrauterine insemination (IUI).
As part of the IUI process I needed to provide my semen. Having to deliver "on the spot" was far from fun. Unfortunately our first cycle of IUI was unsuccessful, but we were committed to as many cycles as necessary.
For our second attempt, I decided to do more research on the sperm collection process. The first thing I stumbled across was an article on sperm collection condoms. Wow. What a relief. Instead of the stress surrounding masturbating at the clinic, we now had the option of collecting sperm in a more natural way. You can't use regular latex condoms, so make sure you buy the right type of condoms. Besides the obvious benefits, I also learned that by collecting sperm during normal love making, increases the fecundity rate (the chance of conceiving per cycle) as the number of motile sperm inseminated is increased.
Anyways, for those of you asked to provide semen through masturbation, I highly recommend asking your clinic if they can accept semen captured during intercourse. This brings some normalcy to the process and the couple can function as a team the way it was meant to be!
Today, my stresses have changed from trying to conceive to raising our baby. I would trade it for the world.
Good luck everyone!
